Chevala Burke, who has been a presiding officer and returning officer in Cayman Brac for the Elections Office for several years, has been appointed as the new deputy supervisor of elections.
Her appointment, made by Governor Jane Owen, was announced on Tuesday.
Burke was the presiding officer for the Cayman Brac East electoral district from 2009 to 2017, before taking on the role of returning officer in 2021. In this capacity, she oversaw candidate nominations, organised and staffed polling stations, supervised vote counting, and officially declared the election results, a press release announcing her new role said.
As deputy supervisor of elections, she will assist the supervisor of elections, Wesley Howell, in managing the overall election process, “ensuring that all procedures are fair, transparent, and in line with legal requirements”, the release noted.
She will work alongside current deputy supervisors, Sheena Glasgow and Ernie Scott, to support Howell in overseeing the electoral process.
“Mrs. Burke’s dedication and proven experience in election management are invaluable to our team. Her leadership will greatly strengthen our efforts to ensure free and fair elections,” Howell said in the release.
Owen shared her congratulations in the statement, saying, “I am delighted to see Mrs. Chevala Burke step into this key role as Deputy Supervisor of Elections. Free, fair, and transparent elections are the foundation of any democracy, and her leadership will help ensure the continued success of the electoral process in the Cayman Islands. I have full confidence in her abilities and wish her every success in this important role.”
Burke will continue to serve as the returning officer for Cayman Brac East for the 2025 general election and referendums.
