I am a born Caymanian and there are some things that I miss from our past. I miss meeting visitors, seeing how they used to love Cayman because of how we were different from where they came from, how we had seemed to be so loving towards one another.
A hairdresser who stayed with me for a while noticed how the people in cars would stop to allow pedestrians to cross the road and how our government at the time ran the country. This was very different to where she came from. So I explained to her how Dr. Roy McTaggart refused to allow Cayman to become independent when Jamaica gained their independence and therefore Cayman remained different from much of the rest of the Caribbean islands.
I also miss visiting my sisters in Christ, talking about Jesus and His goodness to us. I miss how they cried out to Him and He told them that He loved them. In those days people visited one another and there were revival meetings. We knew nothing about denominations in those days; we only knew about the goodness of God to us. People talk about how the island has changed but the island didn’t change itself, people changed the island.
I am very proud of my little islands and always thank God for what He has done for us. He has brought us a long way but I will always wonder why the destruction of the natural beauty is necessary. No human being can give us a guarantee of continued prosperity. What happened to what I used to hear – that Cayman was a God-fearing place? I know the government is not responsible for me but I will continue praying that someone will stop and say “What are we doing trusting man rather than God?”
