The Breast Cancer Foundation of the Cayman Islands welcomed Brazilian rugby legend and breast cancer survivor Raquel Kochhann for an unforgettable weekend of inspiration, empowerment and community spirit.
Raquel’s visit coincided with the Foundation’s annual gala on 4 Oct., the largest fundraising event of the year, which supports the organisation’s vital programs offering financial, emotional and practical assistance to those battling breast cancer in the Cayman Islands.
During her stay, Raquel visited CF School, where she inspired students with her story and joined them on the school field. She also coached the Cayman Islands Women’s Rugby Club and the U18 girls’ team, sharing her passion for sport, teamwork and perseverance.
At the gala, the audience was spellbound as Raquel recounted the moment she received her breast cancer diagnosis at the peak of her international career, as she arrived in Tokyo for the Olympic Games. “You could hear a pin drop,” one guest said.
She was joined on stage by Caymanian survivor Josanny Fermin, who spoke about the Foundation’s impact on her life:
“I didn’t come to them for financial support, but the emotional support, the compassion, the presence – that meant everything. They reminded me I wasn’t alone.”
The weekend concluded with the Kick Cancer into Touch breakfast, where Raquel was surrounded by survivors, supporters, and rugby fans united in hope.
Reflecting on her visit, Raquel shared:
“Visiting the Cayman Islands was one of the best experiences of my life. Sharing my story, hearing others’ resilience, and meeting such incredible people was truly special. I left deeply grateful – for the fight, the strength, and the opportunity to be here.”
Funds raised during the gala will continue to fuel the Foundation’s mission to ensure that every person in Cayman facing breast cancer has access to the care, support, and community they need.
