The Cayman Islands Maritime Administration successfully completed the training for use of the Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) system that provides global identification and tracking of ships to enhance maritime security, improve search and rescue operations and promote marine environment protection.
The LRIT for Maritime Domain Awareness Training for the Coastal State was coordinated by the National Maritime Affairs Secretariat under the Ministry of Financial Services and Commerce.
The joint departmental training session in November included the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service’s Air Transport Unit, the Port Authority of the Cayman Islands, Hazard Management Cayman Islands, the Department of Environment and the Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands.
The Ministry of Financial Services and Commerce’s Acting Chief Officer Kathryn Dinspel-Powell said: “The training underscores the strong inter-agency cooperation that continues to enhance maritime safety and security across the jurisdiction. It reflects the Cayman Islands’ ongoing commitment to excellence in maritime oversight, safety at sea and international compliance.”
The training was conducted by Pole Star Global – the Cayman Islands’ LRIT service provider. Pole Star Global works closely with the International Maritime Organisation and government agencies worldwide, delivering LRIT products and services that support both flag-state responsibilities and ship-operator needs. Pole Star Global’s partnership with the Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands and other Cayman Islands entities remains integral to strengthening maritime domain awareness throughout the region.
Director of Government Relations and Affairs at Pole Star Global, Maura Massana said: “It was a pleasure to work with the Cayman Islands’ maritime and emergency-response teams. Their strong commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement ensures that LRIT remains a powerful tool to strengthen their maritime domain awareness and protecting those who operate at sea.”
