Cayman’s seafaring pioneers will be honoured next month with the annual Sea Sunday celebration, which organisers say ‘will be bigger and better than ever’.

The global religious celebration, observed on the second Sunday in July each year, is an opportunity to give thanks for seafarers and their families and recognise their hard work and sacrifice.

Annual tradition

The Rotary Club of Grand Cayman is returning as the main sponsors of the event, with support also provided by Cayman Airways, the Ministry of Sports, Youth, Culture and Heritage, the Cayman Islands Seafarers Association and Progressive Distributors.

The Sea Sunday tradition started thousands of miles away in southwest London in 1891, when Wimbledon College sent devotional magazines and books to 12 ships to keep hopes up while at sea.

Over the years, Sea Sunday has evolved into a global event and was brought to the Cayman Islands five years ago by Merle McGann (Whorms) who has worked tirelessly to ensure that the hard work and sacrifice of seafarers and their families in creating the Cayman Islands of today is never forgotten.

The annual event will be held at 1pm on 12 July at Seafarers’ Hall in Red Bay, where seamen and women past and present will share their stories of the sea and enjoy a hearty meal provided by the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman. Governor Jane Owen, Premier André Ebanks and other public figures are expected to attend.
