Nearly 200 participants turned out for the inaugural Cayman Islands Basketball Association 5K Walk/Run, making the event a successful celebration of community, fitness and national basketball.

Participants of all ages and fitness levels set off at 6.30am on 28 June, from the Cayman Bay Arts & Recreation Centre, led by Cayman Islands Basketball Association President Collin Anglin.

Proceeds from the inaugural fundraiser will support the association’s national programmes, including assisting the Cayman Islands Under-17 National Team with travel expenses to compete at the AAU Basketball World Championships from 2-5 July in Orlando, Florida.

Prior to the event, Charmaine Miller, a fundraising committee member of the association stated, “We recognise that it is our first event, so it’s not going to be as large as other 5K’s, but our target number is at least 200 participants that can join us.”

Miller added, “That would be phenomenal, and it could certainly contribute to the expense and alleviate some of that off of the association, so that is the plan.”

Anglin said, “The event brought together families, athletes, supporters and community members in a shared display of national pride, reinforcing [our association’s] commitment to developing the sport on and off the court.”

“This event is about more than crossing a finish line, it’s about helping our young athletes reach theirs. We are grateful to everyone who participated, volunteered and supported our vision for the future of basketball in the Cayman Islands,” Anglin added.
