Defense: Smitten Syed pathetic and reckless, but not a thief
Former university president Hassan Syed was a “pathetic middle-aged man” who acted recklessly while “in the throes of a passionate love affair,” his attorney claimed. But, he said, his client had never intended to permanently deprive the college of the funds.
UCCI dean quizzed on credit card policy
The former dean of the University College of the Cayman Islands Brian Chapell testified that the college had no written policy for the use of staff credit cards. Hassan Syed has denied 12 charges, including theft, obtaining money transfers by deception and obtaining a pecuniary advantage.
