New station spins on the market

This New Year’s Eve, a music-packed event series will conclude with the launching of a new dance music radio station.

Spin 94.9 FM, in conjunction with Cable and Wireless and Oneworld Promotions, will host Spin 2004. With a roster of famous disc jockeys, guest appearances by local artists and exciting multi-media features, organisers bill Spin 2004 as the musical event of the year.

Kicking off on Boxing Day night and continuing throughout the week until 4 January, Spin 2004 will entertain the masses across several of Grand Cayman’s favourite venues. The event officially launches the broadcasting, and introduces the talent, who make up Spin 94.9, states a press release from the company, states a press release.

Masterminds, a New Year’s Eve celebration on Fort Street, will be the focus of the six event spread. Decked out festively with a 20- foot video screen showing New York’s Times Square, revellers will watch the ball drop while hearing musical performances by dance music phenomenon DJ Vinyl Richie alongside Canadian-based female MC Lady Precise. DJ Alexi will return from Rhode Island to play the events, as well as well-known DJ Johnny G.

In keeping with this cutting edge musical lineup are well-loved local artists Notch and Blackface, who will perform several collaborations on stage with the visiting DJs. From 9pm on 30 December to 4am New Year’s Day, according to organizers, the street turns into a Times Square-style city celebration of life in Cayman, set to the hottest music on the island right now. An extravagant roof top fireworks display will cap off the New Year’s event.

‘Spin 94.9 is the first station in Cayman that’s truly all about music,’ states Monster Media’s Managing Director Kenny Rankin. ‘What makes us a dance music station is the level of energy that we will maintain. The music itself crosses into so many genres, which is why this electrifying combination of North American, Caribbean and popular music makes so much sense. It’s going to be quite a thing to watch.’

‘The idea has been in the works quite some time,’ says Searlina Bodden, Creative Director of Monster Media. ‘Cayman itself is so diverse, we thought it was time for entertainment and musical offerings that reflect that. Everything from our programming at Spin FM to our staffing reflects that idea of cultural oneness.’

Craig Urchyshyn of Oneworld Promotions will head up Spin 94.9 FM’s lineup of disc jockeys. A well-known DJ and fixture in the entertainment industry, Urchyshyn – who goes by the moniker DJ Downpresser – is the man behind last year’s New Year’s Eve event at Seaview Hotel, which drew 2,000 people. His company has combined forces with Monster Media to plan the six-event blockbuster music series.

‘It’s about time that radio in Cayman is taken to another level,’ states Urchyshyn, who hails from Canada. ‘Spin 94.9 will bring together Cayman’s freshest musical talent from edgy, up-and-coming turn tablists to well-known DJs from Cayman’s hottest nightspots. Spin 2004 will give everyone a taste of what’s to come.’

Leading up to Masterminds on Fort Street, is a six event series of performances by this talented ensemble. All events will stream live to, the company’s entertainment website that launched earlier this month.

‘The response has been so positive to the website,’ Ms Bodden concluded. ‘In just our first weekend, our membership tripled. We can’t wait to see what people think of Spin 94.9 and this incredible event that will start it all.’

Spin 94.9 FM is ICTA approved and operating on its frequency.
