Organisers of the Cable & Wireless Cayman Carnival Batabano are working hard to finalise arrangements for this year’s festival, which is scheduled for Wednesday 4 May – Sunday 8 May.
The line up for this year’s celebrations includes favourites from previous carnivals and exciting new events, as the Batabano Committee strives to include diverse events to allow all sections of the community to participate in the festivities, states a press release.
‘This year’s theme is celebrating all cultures as one,’ explains Cayman Carnival Batabano Chairperson, Donna Myrie. ‘With this theme in mind we would like to invite all residents of the Cayman Islands to take part and celebrate as one with us.’
‘Since Ivan, we have a lot to be thankful for, as we have life, so the carnival will give us a perfect opportunity to relieve stress,’ she added.
One such change in the line-up is the International Song Competition, which will now take place Wednesday 4 May. Contestants are welcome to compete by performing music of their choice, rather than just Caribbean music. The change of day to Wednesday will allow for a new event on Friday 6 May, the Friday Fete, featuring a live concert by a special guest artist.
The traditional Masquerade Ball on Thursday night will offer revellers the opportunity to dine and dance under the stars at Pedro St James Castle.
For many, the highlight of the Cable & Wireless Cayman Carnival Batabano will be the traditional costume parade and street dance on Saturday 7 May. Organisers hope for the highest number of participants yet as the corporate bands, school groups, steel bands and colour mas bands make their way along the parade route.
