Groundbreaking forum sets stage for future

The youth of the Cayman Islands made history this past weekend when the first ever National Candidates Forum with Young People was presented by the Commonwealth Youth Club and the National Youth Commission.

The event, which took place at the First Baptist School, was moderated by Wil Pineau, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce and Deputy Chairman of the NYC, and ran for nearly five hours as concerned youth were able to pose questions to the candidates from the specific districts, says a press release from the Commonwealth Youth Club.

‘Everything worked out very well for the forum,’ stated Club Co-ordinator James Myles. ‘Even though the participation of youth and candidates were less than I expected, it was truly historic and I am very thankful to everyone who came out – youth, adults and candidates – for their voice and their support.’

Club President Kyle McLean added, ‘I don’t think that the real impact of this event will truly be felt right now. This isn’t a ‘one time’ deal; it’s the youth of Cayman laying down a foundation for open dialogue and greater ownership of their community. This is the first step of many.’

The CYC already has plans for the upcoming government. ‘We will be issuing an invitation to those elected on 11 May to have a real opportunity to sit down with young people and discuss the issues with them,’ explained Mr. Myles. ‘Our aim is to have continuous and consistent dialogue throughout the year so that the issues are always on the forefront, not just during elections.’

Some issues that were brought up during the forum included gangs, violence, sex education, HIV/AIDS, condom distribution in schools, the question of nationality and ‘nowhereians’, the graduated drivers license, education, unemployment and youth entrepreneurship.

‘The youth of this country are not only aware and concerned about this country’s problems, but they are also interested in creating the solutions,’ said Mr. Myles. ‘Hopefully now we will be given that chance.’
