New Assembly opens today

The public is welcome to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new term of the Legislative Assembly this morning.

The ceremony will commence at 10am, although those attending should be seated by 9.40am.

Because a large crowd is expected, arrangements have been made to provide a covered area of seating outside the Legislative Assembly building. There will be live television and radio coverage of the event.

The ceremony will begin with the Governor administering the oaths and affirmations to all Members of the House.

Following the oaths, a Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be elected, and then nominations and election of five Members of Cabinet will take place.

Following the election of Cabinet, the Governor will present the Instruments of Appointment to the Leader of Government Business and the Leader of the Opposition.

Other items on the agenda include nominations for the Standing Public Accounts Committee, the Register of Interests Committee.

The Legislative Assembly will also deal with government motions appointing the Standing Business, House and Privileges committees.

Those attending the ceremony should enter the public gallery with decorum and a minimum of disturbance. They should sit down immediately after entering the gallery.

Appropriate dress is required.

Except for authorised members of the press, attendees are not allowed to carry cameras, cell phones or other electronic equipment into the building.

Colin Ross will be Acting Chief Secretary at the ceremony. Chief Secretary George McCarthy will be attending the Caribbean Overseas Territories Deputy Governors and Chief Secretaries Conference in Bermuda.
