Orchestra to return to Castaway’s Grille

Elements of the Cayman National Orchestra took part in another ‘Symphony under the Stars’ at Castaway’s Grille last week.

The arrangement, whereby the Orchestra plays while Castaway’s serves a three-course set-menu meal under its outdoor tent, helps the Orchestra raise money to recover from Hurricane Ivan.

The event has proven popular with residents, with large turn-outs both times the Orchestra has played there.

Castaway’s donates a portion of the ticket proceeds to the Orchestra.

Many of the Orchestra’s members lost instruments during the storm, and most of its music was destroyed.

‘This is a great help to us,’ said Orchestra chairman Paul Joseph.

During the evening, Castaway’s manager and part owner Gian Paolo Carbini presented Mr. Joseph with a check for CI$1,060 as a donation for the first time the Orchestra played there in April.

Musician Sue Horrocks said the Orchestra would take a summer break from the Castaway’s performances, but would return in the fall.

Last week’s performance featured music from the Baroque period. Ms Horrocks said when the Orchestra returns to Castaway’s, it would play a variety of musical theme nights.

Castaway’s part owner Ken Moore said he was pleased to continue the monthly performances in the fall.

‘The evenings benefit everyone,’ he said. ‘It helps the National Orchestra raise money and to gain exposure. It’s good for the people to be able to hear the Orchestra in an informal and relaxed setting. And it helps bring some more culture to the island.’

Mr. Moore says the arrangement is also good for Castaway’s.

‘But I enjoy it so much, if they were doing this somewhere else, I’d still go to watch it.’
