April arrivals down

In a slump since Hurricane Ivan, air arrivals for the month of April are down 54.5 per cent against the equivalent month last year.

Cruise passenger arrivals for April are down 12.77 per cent on the corresponding month in 2004.

The statistics for April, which have just been posted on the Department of Tourism’s Website, show that April, like every month since September’s Hurricane Ivan, has air-arrival figures that are significantly down from previous years.

However, lack of accommodation relating to damage wrought by Ivan is partly responsible.

April 2005 saw 15,423 air arrivals. This compares to previous years’ figures of 33,903 (2004), 27,807 (2003), 26,768 (2002), 35,566 (2001), and 31,908 (2000).

April 2005’s cruise arrivals stands at 166,289, down from the previous two years of 190,631 (2004) and 178,249 (2003).

However, the 2005 figure is higher than previous years: 97,287 for 2000, 106,152 for 2001 and 143,649 for 2002.

Despite Ivan, February and March registered more cruise arrivals than the previous year’s corresponding figures.

Cruise-arrival figures for February 2005 were up 4.63 per cent on the 2004 equivalent, while March cruise arrivals were up 9.42 per cent on 2004’s figure for that month.
