Free plane space offered

Government is offering to pay for up to two Cayman Airways mercy flights to the hurricane-hit USA.

Minister Charles Clifford told the Legislative Assembly on Monday that any supplies the planes might carry would have to be privately donated and coordinated.

The government had considered ways to demonstrate its sympathy for the hardships being faced in the USA, he said.

But they were also aware that there were hundreds of homes in Cayman still in need of repairs, he added.

In balancing these factors, the government was prepared to offer what limited assistance it could, he told the House.

He said they had spoken to the Chamber of Commerce, which had agreed to investigate the possibility of working with others such as the Red Cross.

‘If sufficient supplies are collected for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, then government will purchase the services of Cayman Airways to fly these goods to the affected region,’ Mr. Clifford told the House.

‘We know the difference Cayman Airways made in our own country in saving lives and transporting goods that dramatically improved our living conditions in those first few weeks,’ he said.

‘We think it is most fitting that we should share this blessing with another in their hour of need,’ he added.
