Special Olympics Cayman Islands will hold a re-launch of SOCI Sports training for their athletes this Saturday, September 17. Anyone interested in being a SOCI volunteer is invited to attend an orientation workshop and social for the athletes and their families at the Lighthouse School.
The agenda:
8:30am-9am-Volunteer Registration;
9am-10am – Volunteer Orientation Workshop;
10am-12 – Social for Athletes, Family, Friends, Sponsors, volunteers and coaches to include registering of families and athletes, Bocce and some games
The programmes on which emphasis will be placed for this year are Aquatics, Athletics, MATP, and Bocce.
‘Seeing the huge potential and being a part of helping that potential be realized. This is for me the joy of being a volunteer,’ said long-time volunteer Toni Johnson.
Shari Bovell, principal of the Lighthouse School and a leader of the Special Olympics movement says the rewards for volunteers are plentiful. ‘It’s all about the smiles and pride seen in the athletes, that’s your reward as a volunteer.’
‘It’s very fulfilling to help young men and women reach their potential in sports,’ said SOCI coach Penny McDowall
‘Short durations of hard work, but a lifetime of memories and rewards,’ added SOCI leader Darrel Rankine.
