Air arrivals down

Air arrivals for August 2005 are down nearly 50 per cent compared to last year’s, continuing the sluggish trend of air arrivals brought about by Hurricane Ivan.

Total air arrivals for August are down 48.6 per cent, from 23,191 for last year to 11,917 for August this year, according to figures just released by the Department of Tourism.

The number of stay-over tourists is down, however, in line with available room stock last month, when 41.5 per cent of pre-Ivan room stock was available on all three islands.

Air arrivals for the year to date (through August) are down 53 per cent for the equivalent period last year.

Each month this year air arrivals have been way down on last year’s monthly figures: July was down 49.8 per cent; June was down 47.91 per cent; May was down 52.7 per cent; April was down 54.5 per cent; February was down 58.8 per cent; and January was down 62.6 per cent.

However, the trend also shows that the gap between 2004 and 2005 figures is lessening as more room stock becomes available.

Cruise arrivals for August are up 2.68 per cent on last year’s equivalent, from 119,367 to 122,562. The August 2005 figure is the highest cruise figure for the month since 2002.

Cruise tourism for the year to date (through August) is down 5.58 per cent on the same period in 2004.
