Burner Meet heats up pool

Saturday’s Inaugural Cable & Wireless Back-to-School Burner Swim Meet was simply an enjoyable time for everyone. From the five year-old novice racers to the veteran Senior Team swimmers to the proud parents, smiles were everywhere.

The Stingray Swim Club targeted the fast and fun meet early in the season primarily for the younger swimmers in the program. The meet emphasis was clearly on participation and camaraderie, and it was a hit! Even the parents got into the act with a relay race against the kids – and the parents didn’t fare too badly, coming second amongst the six teams.

Meet Director, Amanda Roberts commented, ‘We were hoping that this burner format would work out well, but it was far more successful than we planned. The younger kids had a lot of fun and it was especially enjoyable to see the parents get into the act. The parent relay race is something we are definitely going to incorporate into future burner and sprint meet formats. We want to thank our meet sponsor Cable & Wireless, as well as Progressive Distributors and Island Taste for their support.’

On hand to watch the frenzied action was Andrea Fa’amoe and Julie Hutton representing Cable & Wireless, the meet sponsor. Ms. Fa’amoe commented, ‘We are so proud to have been able to support this meet. It was simply a wonderful opportunity for our kids to get back into the water, compete and enjoy a beautiful day. Judging from great day everyone had, it appears the swim club has a great season ahead of it.’

Besides having fun, swimmers had a chance to win medals, ribbons and high point trophies. In addition, one lucky Stingray Swim Club member, Bethany Cleaver, won a raffle for the top-of-the-line Nokia mobile phone, compliments of Cable & Wireless.

The Stingray Swim Club was established in 1996 to develop competitive ‘age group’ swimming for ages 6-16, and now has the largest competitive membership and is the fastest growing sports club on the island. SSC arranges travel to away meets, promotes an incentive badge program for its swimmers, holds FINA official clinics, and run the only Caribbean summer swim camp featuring Olympic Gold medalists and visiting National Team Coaches from world-class swim countries.
