Smith’s Cove gets facelift

Department of Tourism staff members did their bit to help the environment recently when they gathered at Smith’s Cove to remove debris from the shoreline, underwater and on the beach as part of the International Coastal Cleanup.

The event heightens public awareness about the vast problem of marine debris and, more importantly, it unites people in an attempt to do something about pollution in their communities, said a DoT press release.

‘The International Coastal Cleanup is the world’s largest volunteer initiative to clean up our marine environment. Each year volunteers worldwide gather on our coasts and shoreline to help clean their beaches, river, lakes and streams of debris. Since 1986, more that 78 million pounds of trash have been cleaned up by almost 5 million volunteers in 118 countries,’ it says.
