Cayman Islands powerlifter wins medals

New powerlifting champion, Arlan Mendez-Meza, together with his coach, WNBF Mr. Universe, Tiger Wilson, recently represented the Cayman Islands Natural Bodybuilding Association (‘CINBA’) at the IPF North American Championships. Held at the L. Knight Convention Centre in Miami Beach, FL, the championships saw over 100 lifters, including many world class champions from 15 of the IPF’s 21 member countries, competing in 20 different classes.

Competing in the 125 kg class with eight other athletes, Arlan achieved his first bronze medal in the squat division. He then went on to compete in the bench press and the deadlift, winning bronze in both those divisions as well. His total sub score was 540 lbs.

At the medal ceremony Arlan also received the overall bronze medal for his weight class. First place winner was Leslie White of the Bahamas while second place went to Ken Wilchombe of the Bahamas.

The top three men’s team champions were, Puerto Rice in first place, U.S.A. in second and the Bahamas in third.

Mr. Mendez-Meza stated that the competition was a great experience for him and that he is looking forward to attending the World & Pan American Powerlifting Championships that take place in November 2005.

While attending the championships, Tiger Wilson accepted, on behalf of CINBA, sponsorship from Titan Support Systems Inc. of Texas, which company will cover the cost of equipping 11 local athletes with proper powerlifting gear.
