Survey goes to homes

The Economics & Statistics Office is gearing up to conduct its semi-annual Labour Force Survey beginning Saturday.

The survey will be conducted over three weeks on Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac.

This household review is a sample survey wherein the sample selection or households selected for interview are generated by computer and are therefore completely random.

This means that not every household will be surveyed and those that are, will be purely by chance, states a GIS press release.

However, since all households have an equal chance of selection every time, the more often the survey is conducted, the higher the chance of repeat selection.

One of the major benefits of repeating the survey at a household is the ability to look at trends.

It must be stressed that the ESO places a high priority on confidentiality and will continue to preserve this tradition.

Questionnaires are destroyed after the data is entered and no information is ever entered that would allow someone to be able to link the data with an individual respondent.

Residents are assured that interviewers collecting data will do so in the strictest confidence and that interviews should take less than 15 minutes to complete.

Most interviewers have previous experience conducting surveys in the Cayman Islands and many will complete additional training prior to the start of the field work.

In addition, under the Statistics Law, all interviewers are required to take an oath of confidentiality. Interviewers will also be easily identified by their government-issued photo identification cards.

Interviews will be conducted by twenty interviewers on Grand Cayman and two on Cayman Brac. Most of the interviewers are employed during the day and must therefore make the majority of their calls during the evenings and on weekends, also usually the best time to find people at home.

The Economics & Statistics Office is appealing for the public’s full cooperation to make the survey a success. Since the inception of the programme Cayman has maintained a high survey response rate and it is hoped that this tradition will continue.

The Labour Force Survey programme has been conducted at this time of year since 1991 and is normally done twice-yearly.
