An incident that resulted in a visiting family getting doused in diesel fuel and being taken to hospital last week is currently under investigation to determine what went wrong, according to the Port Authority of the Cayman Islands.
The Issa family from New Jersey had disembarked their cruise-ship in the North Terminal and were waiting to go on a Turtle Farm excursion when they were sprayed with diesel fuel and taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital last Wednesday, 12 October.
The accident occurred when the lid blew off an underground holding tank, spraying the family with diesel. They escaped serious injury but were treated for diesel in their eyes and on their skin. Six other tourists were treated at the scene and released.
The Port Authority has confirmed that measures have been taken that will prevent a recurrence of last week’s incident ever again, although they did not elaborate on what these measures are.
On the question of compensation to the family over the incident, the Port Authority responded that when the matter has been resolved, all those issues will be addressed.
