Hurricane Hunters indicated that the pressure in Hurricane Wilma is dropping rapidly, a sure sign that it is getting much stronger.
Maximum sustained winds have moved up to 100 mph. Hurricane watches have been extended up to parts of Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, according to weatherchannel.com.
As of 11 p.m. E.D.T. (10 p.m. Cayman Time) Tuesday, Hurricane Wilma was located 185 miles SSW of Grand Cayman: 16.8 N, 82.1 W; with winds of 110 mph and gusts up to 130 mph; and is moving WNW at 8 mph. |
Hurricane Wilma is moving west-northwestward at 8 mph and this general motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours. Heavy showers are likely in Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, northern Honduras and southern Cuba. Conditions are favorable for Wilma to continue strengthen to a major hurricane (winds in excess of 110 mph) soon as it churns into the northwest Caribbean. After that, Wilma may try to slip through the Yucatan Channel into the extreme southern Gulf of Mexico and turn to the east or northeast. Residents of the southern Florida, including the Keys, should begin thinking about the possibility of a hurricane strike sometime this coming weekend.
