The popular Symphony Under the Stars events at Castaway’s Grille return on Wednesday, 2 November, when elements of the Cayman National Orchestra will perform Celtic Tapestry in the restaurant’s outside dining area.
Orchestra members will play two sets while attendees feast on a three-course Celtic meal influenced on the traditional cuisine of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany.
Musician Sue Horrocks said the name Celtic Tapestry pretty much conveys the type of music that will be played that night.
‘It’s sort of a mixture of traditional Celtic arrangements and folk tunes,’ she said.
About a dozen orchestra members are expected to perform Wednesday.
Ms Horrocks said the musicians enjoy the Symphony Under the Stars events, which began earlier this year before a summer hiatus.
‘The pressure is off and we can just sit and play,’ she said.
Performing Celtic music is also a welcomed by the musicians, Ms Horrocks said.
‘I think it’s a nice change from the classical stuff,’ she added.
The musicians will play their regular instruments, however Ms Horrocks said there will some more drums and other percussion instruments, as well as a tin whistle for the Celtic performance.
Castaway’s Grille donates $10 per ticket to the National Orchestra, and for this particular performance, the orchestra will donate part of its proceeds to HospiceCare.
‘We were unable to take part in the Voices for Hospices concert earlier this month for a variety of reasons, so in lieu of that, we thought we’d donate some of the proceeds of this performance to HospiceCare,’ Sue Horrocks remarked.
Normally a once monthly event, Symphony Under the Stars will take place again on 30 November when members of the Orchestra team up with members of the Cayman National Choir for a ‘Castaway’s Christmas’ programme.
Castaway’s part owner Ken Moore is pleased the monthly performances have resumed.
‘The evenings benefit everyone,’ he said. ‘It helps the National Orchestra raise money and to gain exposure. It’s good for the people to be able to hear the Orchestra in an informal and relaxed setting. And it helps bring some more culture to the island.’
Tickets to Celtic Tapestry are $50 each and include the meal. The event starts at 7pm. For reservations, call 947-3456.
