Great start in women’s basketball

Women’s Basketball started off with a bang as four teams faced off in what is expected to be the best women’s league ever.

In game 1, Financial Integrated Serves (FIS) took on Rookie team Welly’s Cool Spot – an all-star under 18 team. Both teams stated off fairly cold but there was high intensity on both ends of the floor. In the second half, FIS would pull away and Welly’s could relinquish their opponent’s lead. The Final Score was 50-21 in favor of FIS. Merta Day was the player of the game with 22 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocks to lead her team to victory. Cindy Loadman and Lavern Ebanks pulled down 13 and 9 rebounds to secure their team’s victory. Cassianne Lawrence led her team with 10 rebounds and 6 points in a losing effort while Sheneka Moore grabbed 9 rebounds.

In the feature game of the night, the tournament favorites – WestTel Straight Shooters – took on Wendy’s Lady Heels. WestTel jumped to a 9-2 lead in the first quarter but the Lady Heels would soon find their form and severely reduce the lead to only 3 by halftime. However, the red hot hand of Eva Aiken would prove to be too much for the Lady Heels and the fast break play of WestTel would seal their victory as their opponents were unable to keep up with the frantic pace. The final Score was 62 -49 in favor of WestTel.

Eva Aiken Led all scorers with 28 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 blocks while Robyn Joe had 16 points, 6 assists and 6 steals for the Shooters!

Dionne O’Garro led the Lady Heels with a commanding 28 point, 18 rebound and 2 block performance while Benieca Thompson added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Wendy’s.

More women’s basketball action takes place this Thursday at 6:15 p.m. at the Eastern Avenue Courts.
