CI announces Cayman Classic

The third annual Cayman Classic Food & Wine Weekend takes place 2-5 March, 2005, at the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort.

‘The weekend will be an incredible experience for all of the islands’ food and wine lovers – and everyone is invited to join in, to learn, to taste and to ‘savour the flavour’ of the Caribbean at this unique event. Local pricing is available for the events, and is listed at the end of this article,’ said a press release from the Department of Tourism.

Highlights of the Classic, which is organised by the Department of Tourism and Food & Wine Magazine, will be cooking demonstrations and wine tasting seminars put on by three of America’s greatest food and wine specialists. Visiting experts include: Aaron Sanchez, Chef and former host of the Food Network’s Melting Pot; Bruce Sherman, Master Chef at Chicago’s famed North Pond Café; and wine expert Joshua Wesson of Best Cellars.

The release reads, ‘The 2006 Cayman Classic will showcase the best of the Cayman Islands, starting with a Welcome Reception highlighting Caymanian cuisine; a Gala Dinner under the Stars where Aaron Sanchez and Bruce Sherman will join local chefs and Joshua Wesson for a sumptuous evening dining event; an afternoon instruction of fine wines, hosted by Jacques Scott Group; cooking demonstrations featuring Caymanian cuisine by the National Trust; and a no-holds barred Celebrity Chef Cook-Off and Champagne Brunch with Aaron Sanchez and Bruce Sherman’.

Additionally, the Saturday night brings action throughout Grand Cayman for a Dine Around line up where a number of local restaurants will feature a special Cayman Classic menu which includes dinner paired with wine at a set price (not including gratuity). Menus can be reviewed and reservations made online at www.caymanislands.ky/caymanclassic06.

‘Building on the excellent local offering of great restaurants, the Cayman Food & Wine Classic is another in a series of events marketing directed at affluent, sophisticated travellers seeking an enriching yet relaxing beach vacation,’ said Pilar Bush, Director of Tourism. ‘There is a segment of discerning consumers referred to as ‘foodies’ by marketers and there is ample evidence this segment will travel to indulge their passion for good food and wine,’ she said. ‘The DoT’s goal is to provide compelling reasons for our target market to ‘try’ the Cayman Islands and for repeat guests, to provide them with new things to do while on the islands – best of all, we have guests from the previous two Cayman Classics already booked to return for this year’s event.

‘I would like to thank the five local restaurants who have chosen to put together special menus for the Cayman Classic weekend’s Saturday night Dine Around – these are Casa Havana, Grand Old House, Hemingways Restaurant, Mezza Restaurant & Bar and Ristorante Pappagallo.’

Prices for the individual events are as follows:

Thursday 2 March – Welcome Reception, included in Weekend Pass and for special guests;

Friday 3 March – Gala Dinner, CI$80 per person inclusive of gratuity;

Friday 3 March and Saturday, 4 March – Cooking Demonstrations and Wine Tasting Seminars, CI$20 per event, per person inclusive of gratuity;

Sunday 5 March- Brunch, CI$40 per person inclusive of gratuity.

A four-day Weekend Pass is also available for CI$160, which includes an invitation to the Welcome Reception, Gala Dinner, Brunch plus one Cooking Demonstration and one Wine Tasting Seminar. Dine Out price not included.
