John Gray High School and Cayman Brac High emerged the winners in the semi-final round of the inter-school debate on Thursday.
The debate between St. Ignatius High and John Gray saw both teams present some strong arguments concerning legalising Sunday trading.
‘It was a heated debate and the rebuttals were very good,’ said JGHS debate coach Rajpal Hemraj. ‘Rebuttals . . . help students to think quickly on their feet.’
While this was going on in Cayman, semi-final contenders in the Brac were making history, said Yyette Gayle, one of Cayman Brac’s inter-debate coaches.
At Cayman Brac High, their A team went up against their B team in the semi-finals. B team emerged the winner to compete against John Gray High for the 2005/06 Inter-School Debate championship.
Competing in the finals will be John Gray A team Stephan Rattan, Thea Bush and Kamala Muregusu. From Cayman Brac High, will be B team Geoffery Grizzel, Staci Scott, Melody Martin and Arthur Isaac.
‘For this debate, a very topical one, we took a more global perspective and looked at it in a way of how all other tourism destinations are affected,’ said coach Hemraj. ‘We narrowed it down to regions and then the Cayman Islands, and that is how we won.’
He said students put in a good deal of work and research into the assignment, spending more than two weeks on the project.
‘It was clear that we did more research and took a more universal (approach) than the other school who basically talked about emotions and Christianity from a religious point of view.
‘We also took all of that into consideration but we also looked at other countries to see what they were doing and analysed it,’ said coach Hemraj.
‘The parents were also involved because they helped the students with their timing. In the debate students have to be within the time limit of eight, six and four minutes.’
The judges were selected by the sponsors of the debate.
Mr. Hemraj said the team also won the Tourism Inter School Debate last year. He said he will continue offering his services in the debating society and be involved in the literary competition at the school.
For their efforts students will receive prizes plaques, cups and certificates.
