Police rev up road patrols

The wheels of justice may not always turn quickly but the wheels of the law certainly can now with the arrival of five new police motorcycles.

On Wednesday, the five new motorbikes were handed over to the RCIP’s traffic department.

The Suzuki 1570s will complement three bikes already in operation and their arrival brings the total in the fleet to eight, said the police.

‘Motorbikes play a pivotal role in helping to make the roads of Grand Cayman safer for everyone,’ said RCIP Commissioner Stuart Kernohan.

‘From detecting speeding motorists to responding to accidents quickly, they are a real asset to the service and could in some cases mean the difference between life and death,’ he said.

The bikes are used by the traffic department in a variety of ways including detecting speeding vehicles, fast response to incidents, roadblocks, public order incidents and ceremonial escort.

The officers taking charge of the new bikes have completed a two-week training course where they learned how to handle the bikes safely with maximum efficiency, said the RCIP.

The motorbikes are part of a government funding package that will see the unit expand its motorbike and car fleet over the next couple of years, they said.
