Batabano committee members and Cable & Wireless bMoble announced a substantial three-year sponsorship agreement for Cayman Carnival Batabano at a press conference held Thursday.
Donna Myrie-Stephen, Batabano chairperson, said at the conference: ‘The dynamics of Batabano are growing more and more each year and we are thrilled that Cable & Wireless bMobile are joining us, pledging their support not only for this year, but for the next three years. We would like to say a big thank you.’
The carnival, which started life out as a single day event in 1984, is a highlight on the social and cultural events calendar in the Cayman Islands. Mrs Myrie-Stephen said that having C&W bMobile on board would ensure that this year’s carnival, scheduled for Friday to Saturday, 5 to 13 May, is the best ever.
Ken Guiste, VP Mobile North Caribbean, also present at the conference, commented: ‘Cable & Wireless bMobile are committed to supporting Cayman’s arts and culture. We are the number one mobile network and this is the number one carnival event in the region. We are really pleased to be sponsoring such an event.’
Mrs Myrie-Stephen, who has chaired the Batabano committee for the past six years, explained that Batabano has grown tremendously over the past years and that the social, cultural and economic value is there for everyone to see. She added that having C&W bMobile on board will allow Batabano to continue to develop.
She also divulged that the Department of Tourism is working to promote Batabano internationally, marketing the carnival as a tourism product.
Mr. Guiste also revealed that Tempo, an MTV station which features music by Caribbean artists and sponsored by C&W across the region, will be filming this year’s Batabano. It will be aired locally on West Star, channel 115, within four weeks of filming. Exact dates are to be confirmed.
Highlights of this year’s Batabano, which has the theme All Nations, One Celebration, will include a junior street parade on a separate day to the adults, giving two parades for carnival fans to enjoy. A junior song competition has also been added to the line-up. The number one soca band, Byron Lee and the Dragonaires will be headlining the carnival.
