Cayman Islands National Dance Company, Dance Unlimited, is to showcase its annual production, Rhythms Within, opening June.
The production, a fusion of African and modern rhythms alongside contemporary dance routines, will feature approximately 70 dancers – almost the entire dance company.
Produced by Lorna Reid, the founding member of Dance Unlimited, and choreographed by Kirk Rowe and dancers Tiffany Dickson and Elizabeth Charles, the production will highlight Cayman’s dancing stars.
Fledgling dancers as young as four will showcase their dancing skills alongside the more experienced and advanced adult members of the company.
The show will fuse music from across the Caribbean and Africa, alongside pop and jazz.
‘This is an exciting show which is a great opportunity for our talented dancers to demonstrate their dance skills,’ Miss Reid said. ‘It is also a way of getting members interested in performing.’
Commenting on the choice of name, Rhythms Within, she said: ‘We all have natural rhythms and everyone uses their own unique rhythms to interpret something differently. This show is about bringing all these together.’
Rehearsals have been taking place since January for the two-hour show which will include a variety of solo, duet and group dances, with the opening and closing pieces featuring all 70 dancers on stage.
‘It has been a mammoth task co-ordinating so many dancers. Our largest number of performers in one production was a few years ago when we had 50 dancers. We have a lot more members now,’ Miss Reid said.
Now in its 18th year, Dance Unlimited was established by Miss Reid to bring a wider variety of dance styles to Cayman.
Since its inception, the dance company has gone on to stage numerous productions. Miss Reid explained that she recently took the decision to hold just one a year due to escalating cost.
She added that the dance company’s annual production, which was not staged last year due to the devastation caused when Hurricane Ivan hit in 2004, has had to be carefully adapted, since the venue, Mary Miller Hall, is not purpose-built for such a performance.
‘Normally we would hold the show at the Harquail Theatre, however, as it was damaged in Ivan we have had to look for alternative venues, which has proved a difficult task.
‘Mary Miller Hall is not really adequately equipped for this scale of production. Stage entrances and exits have had to be carefully controlled and we have limited changing facilities which means we can’t do many costume changes. We also have to rent out sound and lighting equipment at added cost – the Harquail Theatre had all this equipment in place.’
Rhythms Within will be staged June 23, 24, 25, 30, July, 1 and 2 at Mary Miller Hall, Red Bay. Tickets, available from 1 June, cost $15 adults, $10 children and are available by contacting Lorna Reid on 9166-795. Thursday’s matinee performance will be staged from 1pm, Friday and Saturday from 8pm and Sunday from 6pm.
Dance Unlimited will be holding new dance classes, beginners to advanced, from September at Kings Sports Centre. Contact Miss Reid for further information.
