Grand Cayman hosted a big evening of muscle and beauty Saturday at the Kings Sports Centre. Local body stars held their own against visiting competitors from the USA, Europe and elsewhere. (Results, page 17)
The event was a three-in-one affair as the WNBF Pro Natural Universe Bodybuilding Championships, WNBF Pro Natural Caribbean Figure Championships, and INBF Caribbean Grand Prix Bodybuilding & Figure Championships were all contested.
‘We had a wonderful group of athletes competing this year and even though initial indications were that the number of competitors would be higher, the fact that the athletes were all of such high quality made up for any lack of numbers,’ said organizer Susan Wilson. ‘All overseas athletes were impressed with the island and also stated to us that this championship was the most organised and enjoyable one that they had ever entered. Many of them have extended their stay here and are all looking forward to returning to the island, and our championships, next year.’
Susan, and her husband Tiger, thanked all sponsors of the event for allowing them to pull it off successfully. The officials from overseas certainly were impressed.
‘Even before the championships were over on Saturday night the WNBF were already asking us to run the Mr. & Ms. Universe again next year,’ said Susan. ‘This would be a great opportunity, not only for natural bodybuilding here in the Cayman Islands, but also for sports tourism. Unfortunately, although we are extremely greatful to the sponsors of this years event, without more sponsorship in the future it would be impossible for us to continue promoting shows such as the Mr. & Ms. Universe. For us to successfully continue to promote a high quality and prestigious event like this, we would have to have much more sponsorship than we were able to obtain this year. The bottom line is that, unless we do get major sponsorship, we will not be in a position to bring the Universe back to Cayman. This is a commitment that we would need to make within the next month or so and right now, without knowing whether or not we can obtain the level of sponsorship that would be required, we are personally not in a position to make that commitment. Anyone interested in obtaining more information with regards to sponsorship can contact us.’
