Moment of truth

Caymanian Charles Whittaker finally gets his chance to climb into the ring and fight for his dream of winning a world title. The pro boxer is set to fight American Billy Lyell, 22, at the Lion’s Centre this Saturday night. Up for grabs is the vacant NBA Jr. Middleweight World Championship Title. Whittaker will also be defending his WBC Caribbean Championship belt.

Whittaker is 26-12-2 with 16 knockouts. Lyell is 13-2 with two knockouts.

‘I want people who are there that night to know they saw a fight. I want them to be telling their grandchildren one day that they were there. This is something I have waited on for so long,’ said Whittaker, 32. ‘I’m going to win and I hope my opponent puts up a great fight. I want nothing less from him. I want a war. I want to walk away from this with the victory and feeling like I was in one heck of a fight. It’s only right that it be like that. This fight means a lot for me and for Cayman so it should be an all-out war, nothing less than a war.’

There will be three additional professional fights Saturday, including Cayman’s Ian Osborne and an amateur exhibition featuring Troy O’Neil.

Tickets are available at Reflections, Funky Tangs, Corita’s Copper Kettle, King’s Sport Centre, World Gym, Devil’s Hangout, 4 Winds Esso and Micro Matrix. Lucky listeners of Hot 104.1 fm, Cayrock 96.5 fm, and Radio Cayman can also win tickets leading up to the fight.

Bouts are scheduled to begin at 7pm.
