This past Saturday saw more than 70 swimmers get the 2006-2007 swim season off to a flying start at the Lions Pool. The Welcome Back Burner Meet hosted by the Stingray Swim Club was staged primarily for the 10 & Under age group swimmers. The meet offered many first timers, especially those in the Learn To Swim Program, a chance to undertake their first competitive swim meet in a fun format with little pressure or anxiety.
The lead-off swimmers dive in for the annual Kids versus Parents Relay Race at the Stingray Swim Club Welcome Back Burner Swim Meet. The parents are in the far lane. The Welcome Back Burner format introduces the younger swimmers (ages 10 & Under) to competitive swiming but in a fun format. |
Echoing the fun atmosphere was the participation of Lions Pool Coaches Dominic Ross, Alex Webb and Jeanine Rix in the short sprint races with the youngsters as well as David Macdonald from the Masters Hammerheads Swim Club.
At the conclusion of the races a parents versus kids teams relay was held. Although the kids relay teams tried to hold them off, bragging rights were once again retained by the parents as they won the head-to-head competition.
All swimmers earned a participation medal and six randomly selected swimmers were the lucky recipients of Marquee Cinema movie passes.
With the Burner Meet experience behind them, swimmers are encouraged to take the next step forward and participate in the Cayman Airways Sprint Meet on Saturday, October 21. Entry Forms are available at the Lions Pool and online at www.caymanswimming.com. Swimmers entered in the meet by next Wednesday, October 18 will be eligible to win a free Cayman Airways air ticket.
Finally, all members of the Stingray Swim Club (SSC) and the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association (CIASA) are cordially invited to attend the CIASA-SSC ‘Pot Luck’ Fellowship Social set for this Sunday, October 15 from 1PM-5PM up at Rum Point.
