Radio commentary is unsatisfactory

The Cayman Music and Entertainment Association is asking space to comment on the nature and content of the conversations of some on-air personalities of radio stations in Cayman.

Recently we heard a recording of a morning program where the hosts were dealing with a sexually graphic discussion that we consider completely out of place in the Cayman Islands.

I should point out that the CMEA has been successful in getting most radio stations to agree to play local music consistently during the day and part of that agreement included ensuring that the songs would not contain words or phrases that would offend Cayman’s discerning listeners.

If broadcast music is required to live up to meet acceptable levels of decency in the Cayman Islands shouldn’t radio personalities be held to the same standards? Or are these programmers assuming that what is acceptable in the US must be acceptable here?

Radio station owners have a responsibility here, when hiring foreign staff, to establish clear guidelines regarding language on the air, or subjects of discussion. In the same way that raunchy lyrics are to be condemned, so, too, should we be condemning hosts of radio programmes who are stepping way over the line in their chatter.
