He electrified the Cayman Islands when he became the country’s first-ever world champion in any mainstream sport and his fists have barely cooled after earning the NBA Junior Middleweight belt at the Lions Center two weeks ago, but Charles Whittaker shows no signs of slowing down.
‘I am going to keep doing what I do,’ Whittaker said. ‘My next fight is set for November 11th in Pompano Beach [Florida]. None of my titles will be on the line for that one. I just want to stay active and keep fighting. I believe that if you continue to win, people can’t deny you. I could get a call today for another title fight. You just don’t know. My job is to keep fighting and keep winning. Fighting the De Lehoyas and Mosleys is where the big money is. I plan to keep doing what works. Some guys lead with their fists; I lead with my mind.’
Whittaker says a title defence is possible in late February or mid-March. He has already had preliminary discussions with promoters about it. He prefers for that fight to be in Cayman.
‘I think the fans here deserve to see my title defended,’ said Whittaker. ‘I really hope it works out so that it happens like that.’
Whittaker, still emotional after pulling off his unlikely and difficult climb to a world title, says the win was like a huge lifting off of his shoulders.
‘I usually don’t show too much emotion after my fights but this time I felt it and I showed it. I really let loose when the referee stopped the fight.
‘I had always dreamed of fighting for a world title and winning, right here in Cayman in front of my people. And I did it.’
