Attorney faces drug charges

Caymanian attorney Patrick Gregory Schmid will go to trial 26 April on charges of possession and importation of 0.0085 of a gram of cocaine and 0.134 of a gram of methamphetamine.

Charges laid by a Customs officer allege that the offences occurred at Owen Roberts International Airport on 31 July 2006.

The charges show a George Town address for the defendant and his age as 31.

Attorney David McGrath appeared in Summary Court on Monday for Mr. Schmid and said Mr. Schmid was not here and not expected, but he had instructions to fix a trial date as early as possible because the defendant would have to travel from overseas.

Schmid’s name had been on the court’s mention list twice before, but the Crown did not have a file until this week.

On 26 February, when the matter was listed as new, Mr. McGrath said he had not been notified of the date and his client was unaware of it and his client was not in Cayman. He asked for the matter to be put off for a week so he could take instructions and the Crown could get its file.

Magistrate Grace Donalds adjourned the matter until 5 March. A different Crown Counsel was present, but there was still no file. Mr. McGrath told the court that Schmid was overseas, on bail granted by Customs and was not on notice to be in court.

The magistrate put the matter over until 19 March, when Crown Counsel Trevor Ward did have a file and the April trial date was agreed to.

No details of the charges have been aired in court.
