I couldn’t help but read your article on the Caymanian constitution issue.
I would give my left arm, figuratively, to participate in the creation of a constitution.
I cannot imagine anything more sacred and patriotic than helping create a document as important as a constitution. As a citizen of the USA, a teacher of government and a lover of freedom, I can think of no other document as important to a people and a nation.
Reading through the various comments I could not help but notice one persons skepticism about independence.
Independence is not easy nor is it free.
The costs are personal responsibility and self reliance.
But the payoffs are international sovereignty, universal suffrage, and a national identity.
Another thing, how can a constitution become old and outdated?
Ours is 220 years old this year and still chugging along. Why? Because the document is alive.
It’s a living document. It doesn’t change. Only what the document means changes.
The USA has a Supreme Court that tells us what the words mean today.
That’s the great secret to a viable constitution. You must have an impartial body that interprets what the words mean during any given period. Our Supreme Court is the final arbiter in matters of constitutionality. End of story. I know my country doesn’t have the best world image these days. But our Constitution, our Declaration of Independence, our Bill of Rights stand true and solid, a foundation upon which any people could build an independent nation; if you have the courage.
Good luck in your quest.
