The Cayman Islands Sailing Club (CISC) and National Sailing Centre will once again run their popular summer camps in July and August.
The camps teach beginner to advanced sailing and racing skills, as well as sailing safety and other aspects of sail theory.
There are four two-week camps. Each camp runs for two consecutive weeks from Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm and is open to all ages between 5 and 18.
The dates are as follows:
Camp #1: July 2-13
Camp #2: July 16-27
Camp #3: August 6-17
Camp #4: August 20-31
The camps stress skill progression within a fun atmosphere. Besides classroom learning and on-water training, the students play games, race each other, and go on various sailing trips around North Sound.
Michael Weber, the Director of Sailing, said: ‘The summer camps are our most important sail training programme of the year. The two weeks of sailing time allows the children to make considerable gains in their sailing.
‘This year we have a goal of achieving 40 hours on on-water sailing time for each session. We are going to continue the improvements from last year, including running the camps for two weeks and maximising on-water teaching time.’
Garth Griffiths, a popular instructor at the CISC since 2004, is returning to run the programmes.
New for this year is a larger staff of five instructors, a much larger fleet of new sailboats, the option of purchasing a variety of healthy lunches from the Black Pearl Galley and the new Pete O’Neil Teaching Facility.
The larger staff will allow us to have smaller groups, ensuring better one-on-one coaching and feedback. It also ensures that we can divide the group into more ability levels so the children will be challenged to attain the next level.
‘We are grateful for our new teaching facility,’ added Mr Weber. ‘It gives us more sheltered classroom space and new technologies such as televisions for video coaching, ensuring that we continue to produce high-quality instruction.’
The cost of each two-week camp is $600 for non-members of CISC and $500 for members.
Lunches are available from the Black Pearl Galley.
