Today’s Editorial June 13: Join us at Cayman Night

Looking for something to do over the long weekend?

Why not hop a flight to Port Arthur, Texas, and take part in Cayman Night.

It’s happening Saturday at the Parker Building at Lamar State College Port Arthur.

Cayman Night was a tradition in the 1980s and 90s.

Things happened and it died away, but last year Grand Cayman’s sister city decided to revive the party that celebrates all things Caymanian.

Getting people to Cayman Night was done mostly word of mouth last year. Still about 400 people showed up.

And what a success it was. So much so that event organisers are expecting 800-1,000 people this year.

Don’t you want to be one of them?

The two cities were designated sisters back in the 1980s after many Caymanians found themselves living in Texas; particularly in Port Arthur.

Many of us still have Caymanian friends and family who call Texas home away from home.

Most of those who settled in Port Arthur from the Cayman Islands were seamen who found themselves in port there, liked what they saw, bought land and homes and moved their families.

There are still nearly 300 Caymanians living in Port Arthur and many Port Arthur natives vacation in Cayman.

If last year’s Cayman Night is any indication of the party planned this year, it will be a huge success.

Taking stage again this year will be Cayman’s own Barefoot Man, Earl LaPierre and Chuck and Barrie. Joining them this year will be Cayman Cowboy Andy Martin.

The Outrigger Band of Bob Brammer and K.O. Harlow shared the stage last year and will once again entertain the crowds.

In addition to good entertainment there will be lots of food and drink.

Eldon and Brenda Bodden have been busy getting ready to make hundreds of Cayman meat patties for the night and Cayman rum punch and other drink specialities will be served under thatched tiki bars.

So don your tropical shirts, slip into some shorts and slide on your flip flops for another great evening celebrating Cayman in Port Arthur.

We hope there is a lot of interest from the folks on Grand Cayman in joining with Port Arthur to celebrate our long history and sisterhood.
