Five cyclists from the Cayman Islands Cycling Association (CICA) are competing in the BRADA tour of Jamaica. The tour will be held from 13-17 June.
The five cyclists are Brian Chin-Yee, Edison Jackson, Barry Jones, Nevle Kerr and Ashek Wright.
Three of the cyclists are being sponsored by Cayman Airways Ltd. All are expected to travel from 12 June.
The competition will be spilt into five stages. All of the stages will cover 307 miles in five days.
Teams from around the region are set to compete. These include the Jamaican National team, professional teams from the US and a Caribbean side with riders from Barbados, Guyana and Trinidad.
The Jamaica tour is set to be specifically broken down. On 13 June, there will be an introductory 3-mile run or prologue at 2pm.
Thereafter the race will begin in earnest. On 14 June, the first leg will be a 71-mile run from Ocho Rios to Montego Bay. On 15 June, the second leg will be a 78-mile sprint from Montego Bay to Negril. On 16 June, there is an 85-mile marathon from Negril to Mandeville. The race will end with a 70-mile hike from Mandeville to Kingston. All sections of the race are slated to start at 9am.
Two of the cyclists, Jones and Wright, currently ride for local club Team Stingers. They are expected to compete in the upcoming Island Games XII in Greece 30 June-6 July.
The tour is being held, after a seven year hiatus, to raise funds for the Jamaican National Council on Drug Abuse.
Jones encouraged everyone to keep up with the team’s progress by visiting the CICA’s website.
‘We are very grateful and glad that Cayman Airways can help us out.
‘We just want to let the public know that they can support us by checking out www.cicycling.com. They should be able to see news and updates roughly every other day.’
