Nearly half the respondents to the most recent caycompass.com online poll think Cayman will be impacted by a hurricane before the end of the year.
The two-week poll was started just after Hurricane Dean passed about 100 miles south of Grand Cayman after forecasts predicted it would come very close to the island.
Of the 359 respondents to the poll, 85 people (23.7 per cent) thought the Cayman Islands would be impacted by a Category 1 or 2 hurricane, while another 82 people (22.8 per cent) thought the country would be impacted by a major hurricane of Category 3 or above strength.
‘I’ve got a bad feeling about the possibilities,’ wrote one person.
‘I’m thinking we are going to get something similar or worse than Ivan,’ wrote someone else.
‘Beware October,’ wrote another person. ‘Caribbean sea surface temperatures are near record high. We might have more than one hurricane to deal with before this season is over.’
Another 85 people (23.7 per cent) thought the Cayman Islands would have another hurricane scare, but no more damaging storms.
‘I don’t know what the future holds, but may God have mercy on us,’ said one respondent.
Sixty-three people (17.5 per cent) thought the Cayman Islands would be impacted by a tropical storm.
Only 44 people (12.3 per cent) thought Cayman would get through the rest of the year without even a scare.
‘What I think probably doesn’t matter,’ said one person. ‘On the other hand, what I hope for might… No more hurricanes!’
