Kids get encouragement

Giving back through community service results in personal rewards was the lesson learned by Leading Edge Year 8 students Wednesday morning.

The reigning Miss Teen Yentel McGaw and Cayman Caricom Youth Ambassador Nicosia Lawson shared their dreams, accolades, leadership skills and accomplishments they achieved by being involved in the community.

Students learned from the two ambassadors that being involved in community work builds character, develops relationships with local leaders and residents and develops a great sense of personal accomplishment.

Sixteen-year-old Yentel described how being involved in the community gave her a chance to meet people from different countries and developed her leadership and creative skills. She helped with projects, joined clubs and found a more constructive use of her time.

Nicosia said it gave her the opportunity to travel, meet with the elderly, prepare her for the world of work and presented benefits, opportunities and roles through different service clubs and projects.

Both ladies encouraged students to make a difference in the community. ‘The results are rewarding,’ they said.

James Myles from the Youth Service Unit shared with students how they could become involved in various projects, clubs and groups in the community.
