Youngsters pack the pool for KPMG fun event

The new swimming season is looming and the Stingray Swim Club hosted its traditional season opener, the third annual Back to School Burner Meet, last week. The name ‘Burner’ was adopted as the action is fast with the emphasis on short races, having fun and participation. It also referred to the hot September sun but by moving it to Friday evening, the Club took advantage of the lovely cool weather after a stiflingly hot week.

The youngsters turned out in force with nearly 70 swimmers registered. In the 6 & unders, Jonah Narborough and Samantha Peene won all their races and the same feat was achieved in the Open category by Lara Butler and Seiji Groome. Katie Klein and Lleyton James won three out of four, Lleyton being pipped in the freestyle by Cameron Streete, a relative newcomer to competitive swimming.

Samantha (Peene) had a shock in her second race when she found her opponent was new coach Jason Schmidt, anxious not to let her swim a length of backstroke alone. Samantha won.

As usual, the really little ones stole the show and people’s hearts. The 6& unders breaststroke and freestyle only featured three swimmers, but two of them were four years old! But Teagan Galloway and Emily Link finished both races. In the boys, we had four-year old Garrett Thompson, an intrepid three year-old Nick McAllum, four year-old Dylan Lewis finishing fifth (out of 9), and 5 year-old Will Roberts, almost a veteran, taking 2nd in his backstroke race (out of six).

It was great to see the pool full and bustling with activity. There were no high points awards, no records to break (except for an unconfirmed record is the amount of pizza consumed by excited, hungry youngsters), but there was racing and there were medals…

The Stingray Swim Club has an action-packed year ahead with two more burners, three sprint meets (sign up now for the CAL Meet on October 13th), three four-day meets and two all-level overseas trips already planned. Registration for 2007-8 opens this Saturday at the Lions Pool from 9.00 a.m. To join or find out more about the Club, contact the Secretary on 925-5410 or [email protected] , talk to any Board member or visit our website at (email: [email protected]).
