A new non-stop service between Boston and Grand Cayman, starting in January, was announced by US Airways on Thursday.
Flights will operate once a week on Saturdays using the 124-seat Airbus 319 aircraft, effective 12 January, 2008.
This is great news for Boston folk escaping the snow and for local residents too, as Boston and its surrounding areas are great holiday destinations for the whole family, said a press release from the Department of Tourism.
Minister of Tourism Charles Clifford said in the press release, ‘Added airlift from the North East is welcomed, particularly by an airline partner who has the ability to draw customers from both the immediate catchment area in Boston and beyond given its extensive network and presence there. We look forward to providing the Caymanian version of a winter holiday to visitors from the New England area.’
Director of Tourism Pilar Bush said that the Cayman Islands tourism industry welcomed the opportunity to work directly with US Airways and US Airways Vacations to help increase the number of visitors to the destination.
Cayman Airways had previously run winter service to Boston but that was discontinued this year with the airline stating that the market size was not big enough to uphold the flights. This was announced back in March when Cayman Airways also announced its direct service to JFK, New York, which has been proving very popular.
President of the Cayman Islands Tourism Association Karie Bergstrom commented on the US Airways flights, ‘As always any addition of direct flights to and from major cities, especially those that bring tourists here, is a win/win situation for the industry, and Boston is one of those cities. It will complement the New York service we already have. We’re very grateful to US Airways for bringing this on.’
Book by 30 November for travel between 9 January and 30 April for a US$222 roundtrip fare plus taxes and fees, said US Airways spokesperson Valerie Wunder.
She also commented, ‘The average temperature in Boston in January is 36 degrees so it’s great to offer another Caribbean destination for people to escape the winter.’
Service is as follows –

Flight Number: 1735
Departure Time: 8:00am
Arrival Time: 12:19pm.
From Grand Cayman to Boston:

The schedule is one the tourism industry is pleased with, as it will allow guests to leave Boston in the early morning, the release notes, arriving with time to spend the whole afternoon on the beaches; and when returning home it allows guests one last lazy morning in the sun before checking out and heading home.
