Mezza hosts hair raising charity event

Mezza Restaurant and Bar is hosting a charity event Monday, 10 December, starting at 7pm benefiting children with hair loss diseases.

Hairstylists will volunteer their time to cut locks of hair from willing volunteers to donate to children in need. All the hair will be donated to a non-profit organisation called Locks of Love, which provides recipients with a custom, vacuum-fitted hairpiece made entirely from donated human hair. The vacuum fit is designed for children who have experienced a total loss of scalp hair and does not require the use of tape or glue.

Most of the applicants suffer from an autoimmune condition called alopecia areata for which there is no known cause or cure. Others have suffered severe burns or injuries or endured radiation treatment to the brain stem or other dermatological conditions that result in permanent hair loss.

The organisation, which began operation in 1998, has helped over 2,000 children since its first year of operation. Thousands of bundles of donated hair arrive as a result of the national publicity that Locks of Love receives in newspapers, magazines and television programmes. Children comprise over 80 percent of the donors, making this a charity where children have an opportunity to help children.

Donated hair is evaluated for its usefulness according to the following guidelines:

• It must be at least 10 inches in length

• It must be bundled in a pony-tail or a braid

• Bleached hair cannot be used. Hair that has been dyed or permed can be used.

Many people have already pledged to come to support the brave men and women who are fearlessly altering their appearance to give normalcy to financially disadvantaged children.

Mezza’s own staff members Natasha Casebolt and Jacqui Farrington were the first to sign up for the event as well as recruit most of the volunteers themselves.

Natasha has been growing her hair out for over two years and plans to donate over 12 inches during the event.

‘I am a little scared of the new look but thinking of the children this will help gave me the push that I needed to cut it all off,’ she said.

A $45 door donation includes a champagne reception, an event long buffet featuring Mezza’s signature dishes & hors d’oeuvres. SPIN FM’s DJ Alexi and friends will bring you the sounds of the past, from Motown to classic feel good 70s. The event ends at midnight.
