Signs of Christmas are appearing in Cayman. Cool dry northerly wind is starting to push through and with it each year comes one of the world’s fastest fish. In life everything has its season and right now in Cayman, the extraordinary ‘queenfish’ or wahoo is running.
Normally wahoo weigh about 25 pounds on average, but at this time of year there can be big ones out there. Wahoos weighing in at 60 to 100 pounds are now patrolling the coast of Cayman.
‘Most of the fish are being caught trolling along the edge of the drop off in 200 to 500 feet of water,’ explained Richard Orr, who runs a charter boat out of Morgan’s Harbour.
Wahoo have been clocked doing 48 mph; they are the third fastest fish with only the marlin and sail fish recording quicker times.
