A 34-year-old man was sentenced Friday to 20 years imprisonment after he admitted attacking a 31-year-old woman with a machete.
Henricho Everton Swaby appeared before Her Honour Justice Levers and pleaded guilty to charges of grievous bodily harm with intent, kidnap of a minor and actual bodily harm.
Swaby, a Jamaican national, was arrested on 1 June following the attack in which he severed the victim’s right hand. The victim flew to Miami where she underwent successful reconstructive surgery to reattach her hand.
Upon sentencing, the Judge recommended that Swaby does not get parole and is deported upon his eventual release from prison.
Senior Investigating Officer, Chief Inspector Peter Kennett, said: ‘This was a wicked, evil attack on one of the bravest women I have ever had the privilege to meet.
‘I totally agree with the sentence given and the comments made by the judge. This sentence should also send a stark warning to others that violence will not be tolerated in the Cayman Islands.’
