Local performers band together

Local performers are coming together for the Lean On Me Charity Event 2008.

The entertainment extravaganza is scheduled to take place Saturday, 26 January, at the Lions Centre.

Proceeds from the fundraising concert will benefit local entertainer Errol ‘Skanky’ Grant, who is currently battling male breast cancer, the Cayman Islands HospiceCare and the Pines Retirement Home.

The event includes over 30 local entertainers. As well as musical entertainment, the event will also include a comedy segment, fashion show – presented by One345 and Twilight Company – body building event, featuring Diane Chung, Agatha Broderick and Karen Woon Sam, and dance show. In addition, there will also be appearances by Miss Cayman and Miss Teen.

Entertainers include Sookie and Zekial, DJ La Familia, Andrea Rivera, Monalisa, Rizelle Ramos, Notch, Musical Crew, Dellon Myles, Intransit, Coolie the Cool, JG, Impulz Band, KK Alese, Trade Winds, Andy Martin, CBR, Drew Bodden, Heat, Barbara Gee, Nadine Hylton and Kimberley Powell.

The event is being spearheaded by Derri Dacres-Lee, founder and chairperson of the Lean On Me committee.

Ms Dacres-Lee set up the committee in July 2006, to host the inaugural Lean On Me event to raise funds for Nina Orrett, a local entertainer who was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

‘We decided to make the Lean On Me an annual concert,’ Ms Dacres-Lee said. ‘It will be held in the same fashion, to primarily help local musicians. We saw a need in the community of people requiring assistance with medical bills.’

Ms Dacres-Lee added that the show is expected to run between two to three hours, with each musician performing just one song.

The concert aims to offer something for everyone, with music tastes from country, reggae, hip hop, rap and calypso all being catered for.

‘It will be a very versatile, family-friendly show.

‘We had some 3,000 people attend the first Lean On Me event, so we are expecting a large turnout. However, we still need more monetary help to put on the show,’ Ms Dacres-Lee commented.

Offering refreshment throughout the duration of the show, Helium Restaurant will be providing a selection of local food to help keep hunger at bay.

Tickets, available from Funky Tangs, Cachet Beauty Salon and from Lean On Me Committee members, are $20. Admission for children aged 12 and under is $12. Children under five go free. Doors open 5pm. Showtime is at 6pm.
