I write to add my sentiments of support for our Cayman Islands National Football team. Although I was disappointed that we did not capitalise on a number of opportunities to win the qualifier against Bermuda, I was still pleased by a number of aspects of our team’s play, which demonstrates the team’s growth under the tutelage of Coach Brown.
No team ever jumps up and wins the World Cup and we must accept that this is part of the process for our Cayman team. However, this is a decent squad of young players who deserve our support as they work to meet their full potential.
Bear in mind that our opponents have the advantage of playing together for several years and professionally. Our team is relatively new by comparison, with young players. Yet Cayman performed quite well on 30 March and there were a lot of positives we can take from that game and not hold our heads down.
I should also add that the support Cayman showed for our boys was one of the most heartwarming things I have experienced in years, although it is frustrating that we still seem to struggle to cheer for our boys when they were down – that is when our team needs it the most.
Surely we are not going to only love and support our Cayman boys when they are winning. Anyone who has that kind of view is not a real fan of Cayman but is just a follower.
For my part, I am a fan of Cayman first and a football fan second. I will support any Cayman team at all times, through thick and thin, to the last whistle. So I look forward to supporting Cayman during the upcoming Digicel Cup. Even if I am all alone with just my flag, I will be there cheering on my Cayman team and showing my patriotism and loyalty. Cayman is always first in my heart and mind, everybody else second.
Best of luck to our boys!
