Jamaica’s Asafa Powell has confirmed that he will run at the Bislett Games Grand Prix in Oslo, Norway, on 6 June which will be the second competition of this year’s six Golden League meets.
The scene is now set for an exciting race where Powell will meet, among others, the emerging Norwegian sprinter Jaysuma Saidy Ndure, 24, a contest that should excite the home crowd.
The Gambian-born sprinter won the 100 metres at the Golden League meet in Berlin last year in 10.14 seconds and then ran a national record of 10.06secs to finish second to Powell at the World Athletics Final in Stuttgart last September.
Powell, 25, is the 100m world record holder with 9.74secs in his heat at the IAAF World Athletics Tour meeting in Rieti, Italy seven months ago. That performance made up for a disappointing Osaka World Championship for Powell who finished with a bronze in the 100m.
So far the contests between the two men have seen Powell win all four times against Ndure. But the Norwegian is improving significantly and he could be a threat at the Beijing Olympics.
Powell’s agent, Paul Doyle, has also revealed that Powell will definitely meet American star Tyson Gay before the Olympics, probably in Europe sometime in July.
