Delivering the opening address, Financial Secretary Kenneth Jefferson said the annual conference provides ‘an opportunity for captains of the maritime industry to come together to address matters of mutual concern.’

He added that in keeping with international conventions and UK policy, the open exchange between Red Ensign Group members ensures their respective registers maintain international maritime standards in accordance with obligations under international Conventions and in accordance with UK policy. Mr Jefferson explained that in this regard, the annual conference serves as a forum to discuss a number of policies and technical issues.

These relate to current international rule-making, maritime legislation, marine pollution prevention, and the welfare of seafarers whether on vessels registered under Red Ensign flags or on ships bearing other flags that visit the ports of Red Ensign Group members.
